It is one of the most common areas of chip damage we correct on the Model Y — and it is physical impact damage, which a coating cannot stop.
The lower rear doors and rear quarter panels cop stone chips because the front tyres pick up road debris and throw it back along the side of the car — straight onto that panel. Because it is a physical impact, only paint protection film can prevent it. A coating cannot.
As the front wheels turn and roll, they pick up stones and grit off the road and throw it rearward along the side of the vehicle. The lower rear doors and the leading edge of the rear quarter sit directly in that firing line. On the Model Y — with its larger, more exposed panels — that lower rear section takes a steady stream of small impacts over normal driving, and freeway kilometres accelerate it.

This is the single most common thing owners misunderstand. A graphene or ceramic coating is a microns-thin chemical layer. It is excellent at what it does — resisting contamination and UV, improving water behaviour and gloss, and making the car far easier to keep clean — but it cannot absorb a physical impact. A stone at highway speed carries real energy. As we tell customers: a coating protects the surface; only paint protection film stops a physical stone chip. Stone chips are, in fact, the most common damage we correct in the workshop.
You do not always need to wrap the whole car to solve this. Genuine self-healing PPF over the lower rear doors and quarters — typically alongside a full front — absorbs the impact instead of the paint. For owners who want maximum preservation, full vehicle PPF covers everything. The film we use is Avery Dennison, backed by warranties up to 12 years, and its self-healing top coat means light marring lifts out with heat.
Once a chip breaks through to primer or bare metal, it is no longer a wash-and-go — it is a paint repair. And matching a repair invisibly next to original Tesla factory paint is genuinely difficult. Preventing the damage with film is a fraction of the cost and keeps the factory finish original. We see both ends of this every week — which is exactly why we would protect that panel early.
