How to Choose a Tesla PPF Installer: What Actually Matters

Most advice tells you installation is everything and any “quality film” will do. That is not what we see. The film matters just as much — and the film market has quietly become a minefield.

The short answer

Two things decide the result, and they matter equally: the film that goes on the car, and the person putting it on. Get either wrong and the job is compromised. Here is what to actually check — starting with the film.

The film problem most owners never hear about

There is a flood of cheap paint protection film coming into the market — imitation film, self-imported film, and “white-label” or “white-box” film. A lot of it is manufactured cheaply overseas, bought in bulk, and marketed by whoever imports it as the best film on the market. Often it is a low-cost film with a brand name added afterwards.

What is less well known is that this is not limited to no-name brands. Many PPF labels are not manufacturers at all. They source the film from one supplier and the adhesive from another, then sell it under their own brand. The problem with that model is consistency: when the film and the adhesive can change from batch to batch and plant to plant, you do not actually know what you are getting on your car.

This is not just cosmetic. A poor adhesive can damage the very paint you are trying to protect, and cheap film is where you see lifting edges, yellowing, and film that becomes a problem to remove years later.

Why we install Avery Dennison

We are an Avery Dennison Global Platinum Partner. Avery's film and adhesive science goes back to 1935 — close to a century of manufacturing — and, crucially, they make their own film and their own adhesive in-house, rather than buying the cheapest option. That control is why the product is consistent roll to roll, and why we back it with warranties up to 12 years (Ultima 7-year and Xtreme Supreme 12-year). That vertical integration — one manufacturer making both the film and its adhesive, rather than sourcing them separately — is a large part of why we choose it.

Then judge the install — it matters just as much

Even the best film can still be ruined by a poor install. Once you have established the film is genuine and manufacturer-consistent, judge the installer on the things that actually determine the finish:

  • Automotive qualifications, not just detailing. A Tesla is full of trims, cameras and sensors that must be released and refitted correctly. Because I'm a qualified panel beater and Tesla-trained, we remove badges, trims and panels, install the film underneath and wrap every edge, then refit — so there are no exposed edges. Most installers cut around those parts to save time.
  • Preparation. Film seals in whatever is beneath it, so decontamination and paint inspection come before anything is applied.
  • Camera recalibration. Your Tesla drives on its cameras. If they are removed during an install and not recalibrated to factory OEM standards, it affects Autopilot and your safety systems. We handle that recalibration as part of the job.
  • Time. A proper full-front install takes about 2.5 days, and a full vehicle 4–5 days, with one specialist on your car. A three-day full-car turnaround means multiple installers and mismatched standards on the one vehicle.
  • Accountability. Because we also repair paint and panels, if anything ever needs to come off and go back on, we can stand behind the whole job.
“Cheap, self-imported film is not the same product — a poor adhesive can damage the very paint you're protecting.”

The questions to ask any installer

  • What film are you using, who manufactures it, and are the film and adhesive made by the same company?
  • Are you automotively qualified, or detailing-trained only?
  • Do you remove panels, badges and trims, or wrap over them?
  • What preparation happens before the film goes on?
  • Are the cameras recalibrated after the install?
  • What is covered — the film warranty and your workmanship?

Get honest answers to those and you will quickly separate a genuine specialist from someone importing cheap film and hoping.
