Protecting the New Tesla Model Y L: What’s Different, and What to Do First
The six-seat Model Y L has arrived in Australia — a longer body, longer rear doors and family-duty use change what is worth protecting, and when.
Technically reviewed 14 October 2026
The Model Y L is a larger Model Y — more panel area in the stone-chip firing line, longer rear doors, and a third row and boot that take family wear. The protection logic does not change: paint protection film stops a physical impact, a coating protects the surface. The move is to arrange it before the car goes into daily service.
What’s actually new on the Model Y L
Tesla’s six-seat Model Y L went on sale in Australia in 2026 from around $74,900, with first deliveries from the second quarter — the first three-row Tesla offered here. It is roughly 177mm longer than the standard Model Y (mostly a 150mm longer wheelbase) and around 44mm taller, in a 2+2+2 six-seat layout, with adaptive suspension and vehicle-to-load.
For protection, the extra size matters. A longer body means more lower-door and rear-quarter area sitting in the path of debris thrown off the front tyres — the exact zone we film most often — plus more frontal area meeting the road at highway speed.
The paint reality on a new Tesla
Tesla’s factory paint is thin, and the water-based clear coat is softer than what we see on comparably priced European cars. In the workshop that shows up as swirl marks and stone chips appearing sooner than owners expect. Protecting a Tesla early — before the first machine washes and the first freeway kilometres — keeps the original factory finish intact rather than repairing it later.

Where the Model Y L takes the hits
The front end goes first: the bumper, bonnet leading edge, mirrors and A-pillars absorb most of the highway stone impact. Then the lower rear doors and the leading edge of the rear quarters — and on the longer Model Y L that lower-rear zone is bigger again.
You do not have to wrap the whole car to deal with it. A full front is the common starting point; targeted film over the lower rear doors and quarters adds the second-most-hit zone; and full vehicle PPF covers everything for owners who want maximum preservation. The film we use is Avery Dennison, backed by warranties up to 12 years, with a self-healing top coat that lifts light marring with heat.
A six-seat cabin, and a lot of glass
The Model Y L is a family car, so the third row, boot floor and door sills see more wear than a two-row Y — worth factoring into interior protection. Its large glass roof over a full cabin also means more heat and UV reaching passengers; quality ceramic window tint helps keep six seats comfortable and protects the interior trim. For the paint itself, a ceramic or graphene coating handles contamination, UV and cleaning — but remember a coating cannot stop a stone.
The first two weeks: what to arrange, and when
Start by having the paint assessed. Not every new Tesla needs paint correction before a coating — we inspect first and only correct what the paint actually needs.
Then book protection before the car goes into daily service. Film and coatings are easiest to apply — and most effective — on paint that has not yet collected wash swirls and road grime.
If you are buying the Model Y L on a novated lease, which is common at this price, protection can be arranged around delivery. We cover the timing in Protecting a Tesla bought on a novated lease.
We see both ends of this every week — cars protected early, and cars in for repair once the damage is done. On a brand-new Model Y L, we would protect it early.
