What Makes a Tesla Specialist? (And Why It Matters for Your Car)

“Tesla specialist” is a label anyone can print on a website. Very few workshops actually earn it. Here is what the title should mean — the qualifications, the EV-specific knowledge and the accountability behind it — and the questions that quickly reveal who has it.

The short answer

A genuine Tesla specialist is defined by three things working together: formal trade qualifications (panel, paint and mechanical), Tesla-specific training and hands-on experience across the current range, and high-voltage EV safety accreditation. The label on its own means nothing. Ask for the qualifications, ask which products they use and why, and ask who stands behind the warranty.

The label is everywhere. The qualification isn’t.

Search “Tesla specialist” in Melbourne and you will find detailers, wrap shops and general workshops all using the same phrase. It has become a marketing word. The problem is that working on a Tesla well is not the same as working on a normal car, and the gap between a business that says specialist and one that genuinely is shows up in the finished work — usually months later, when something starts to lift, haze or fail.

We think owners deserve a clearer definition. So here is ours, and it is the same standard we hold ourselves to.

A Tesla is not a normal car to work on

Several things make a Tesla genuinely different under the hands:

  • The paint is soft and thin. Tesla’s factory finish marks easily and corrects differently to most European or Japanese paint. Aggressive correction on a fresh car does more harm than good.
  • The panels and structure are mixed materials. Aluminium, steel, composites and large structural castings all behave differently in repair and refinishing. Getting this wrong is expensive to undo.
  • It is a high-voltage vehicle. Work in the wrong place without the right training and qualification is genuinely dangerous — to the person and to the car.
  • Sensors, cameras and antennas are everywhere. Film, tint and trim all have to respect where the car “sees” and transmits. A careless edge or the wrong tint in the wrong place can interfere with how the car functions.

None of that is a reason to be nervous. It is simply the reason a Tesla should be in the hands of someone who has done the training, not someone applying generic detailing habits to a very specific car.

What a real specialist actually has

Strip away the marketing and a genuine Tesla specialist can point to all of the following:

  • Formal trade qualifications. Qualified panel beating, spray painting and mechanical repair — not “years of experience” as a substitute for a trade.
  • Tesla-specific training and accreditation. Training that is about Teslas specifically, kept current as the cars change.
  • EV and hybrid high-voltage qualification. The accreditation required to work safely and legally around an electric drivetrain.
  • Range experience. Real time across the Model 3, Model Y, the new Model Y L, and the Highland and Juniper updates — because the differences between them matter.
  • Globally recognised products with real warranties. No imitation products and no self-branded film. The work is backed by brands the industry recognises, with warranties that are actually honoured.
“The title ‘Tesla specialist’ should describe a qualification, not a marketing choice. Ask for the proof — a real specialist is glad to show it.”

Watch: what actually separates a Tesla specialist

Video summary

Not every detailer is a Tesla specialist. In this short, Mick from Lucky Five Motorsport explains what genuinely separates a Tesla specialist from the rest — the formal qualifications, the Tesla-specific training and the hands-on experience across the Model 3, Model Y, Model Y L, Highland and Juniper — and why that difference shows up in the quality and longevity of paint protection and ceramic coating work. Lucky Five Motorsport is Melbourne’s original Tesla specialist team.

Why it matters for the actual work

The difference is not abstract. It shows up in every job:

  • Paint protection film. Edges wrapped properly, panels removed where they should be — not razor-cut on the car, which is faster for the installer and worse for your paint.
  • Paint correction. The judgement to assess a soft factory finish first and correct only what needs it, rather than cutting a new car hard because that is the default.
  • Ceramic and graphene coatings. Preparation that actually lets the coating bond and last, not a quick layer over an unprepared surface.
  • Window tint. Film and placement chosen around the car’s cameras, sensors and antennas — not applied like it’s any other hatchback.

The questions to ask any “Tesla specialist”

You do not need to be technical to tell the difference. Ask these, and listen for specific answers:

  • What are your formal trade qualifications, and are you Tesla-trained and EV-qualified?
  • Which film or coating do you use on Teslas, and why that one?
  • Do you remove panels and wrap edges, or cut the film on the car?
  • Who honours the warranty if something goes wrong — you, or a brand that stands behind it?
  • How many Teslas do you actually work on, and across which models?

A genuine specialist answers these easily and is happy to show the proof. If the answers are vague, that tells you what you need to know.
